How to use Yumu

Your teacher has provided you with a Yumu account to help support your music-making and learning. Yumu is a safe online space which you can log into from anywhere as long as you have internet access using a computer or tablet.

Yumu is managed by an online music education company called Charanga, and you can read more about them here.

Everything in Yumu works online. You simply visit the Yumu website and log into it. You don’t need to install any software.

Your teacher can provide you with music assignments and projects, which will appear on your Yumu homepage when you log in.

Creative Tools

Once logged into Yumu, you can use some of Charanga’s Creative Tools immediately. They include Quickbeats, a drum machine helping you create drum patterns and beats, and YuStudio, Charanga’s online music studio, a digital audio workstation (DAW) helping you to record complete tracks.

Assignments

Your teacher can provide you with assignments and projects on your Yumu homepage. As you work through them, you will see that your progress is tracked using green buttons for each activity and on a green progress bar. Your teacher can see how everyone in your class or group is getting on with their assignments.

My Work

Everything you create in Yumu is saved in your My Work area. You can also upload audio, video and image files into My Work. This is useful if you’ve been working offline and have saved something you later want to add to your Yumu account.

Rules for uploading and saving your work

Your teacher can see everything in your My Work area – including anything you upload.

Like everything else you do at school, for homework, or as part of a project, the work you create or upload onto Yumu should be suitable and appropriate.

When you upload audio, video or image files to Yumu, you need to make sure you have permission to do so. If it’s all your work, no problem! But using other people’s music, videos or photos without their permission is against copyright law.

If you are unsure whether you can upload an image, audio or video file into Yumu, check with your teacher.

If you forget your username or password

Ask your teacher for help. They will be able to remind you of your password.

If you can’t hear any sound

Check that your speakers or headphones are correctly plugged in and that the volume on your phone, computer or device is turned up.

Make sure that your speakers aren’t muted and that the speakers are active.

If this doesn’t work, ask your teacher to help you. If your teacher can’t fix it, they can contact Charanga.

And finally…

As well as seeing all the work you have saved or uploaded to My Work, your teacher can see how many Yumu points you have collected and look up when you’ve logged into Yumu.

You can also use the MESSAGES feature to contact your teacher about your work, and they can send you messages, too. Messages can’t be deleted; you and your teacher can see them in your message history.

Last but not least, always remember to log out of Yumu after your session! We hope you enjoy getting creative.
